Dr. Robert Lorino of Smiles by Lorino has some tips to help patients in Wayne, NJ to distinguish between a dentist and an orthodontist. The difference between an orthodontist and a dentist may be indistinguishable to some people. Something that many folks don’t know is that all orthodontists can be dentists, but not all dentists can be orthodontists. They are both certified oral health care professionals, treat and maintain the health of your teeth and gums, and have the education and experience to be called doctors. In these areas, they are pretty comparable. However, there are more differences than similarities. What’s the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist? All orthodontists require further schooling and more experience in their specialty (orthodontics) beyond their dental school training. Dr. Robert Lorino and the Smile by Lorino staff take the time to instruct each of their orthodontics patients in the Bloomfield, NJ area how to floss while they are being treated with braces. Wearing braces on the teeth can make good oral hygiene habits difficult to perform, can create spaces where food debris can collect, and they provide an environment for bacteria to thrive. Good brushing and flossing techniques and habits while undergoing orthodontic treatment with braces is often a challenge, but flossing with braces can be accomplished effectively once equipped with a little advice.  Why floss? The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) advises that flossing is just as important as brushing in a conscientiously applied regimen of good oral hygiene. Toothbrushes are great for cleaning plaque from the fronts and back surfaces of the teeth, but they simply cannot reach the sides, in between the teeth, and along the gumline. Food debris in the mouth feeds bacteria. The bacteria in the mouth creates acid that causes bad breath and breaks down tooth enamel. Flossing removes most of this acid-causing food debris to keep teeth healthier and breath fresher. Get in the game. A floss pick is an instrument…

A new set of tray aligners is exchanged for the old set in approximately two-week intervals as part of the course of treatment.  How much work do I need done? Typically, Invisalign is recommended by orthodontists to patients who do not need extensive or complex orthodontic treatment. Dr. Robert Lorino prescribes Invisalign for fixing such conditions as over- or under-bites, overcrowding, gapped teeth, or those with general spacing issues. Raising and lowering teeth or large tooth spacings are typically more effectively treated with traditional braces. Will Invisalign fit…

But most people don’t understand or even care why they are in pain. Pain from orthodontic treatments with braces may be cause by a variety of factors: Irritation inside the mouth: Your mouth will need a few days to adjust once your new braces have been fitted and your teeth and gums are interacting with your appliances for the first time. These new additions to your teeth require your mouth to get comfortable with their presence. However, once the two are comfortable, the irritation…
Dr. Robert Lorino of Smiles By Lorino near Passaic, NJ has some tips to help patients to distinguish between a dentist and an orthodontist. The difference between an orthodontist and a dentist is indistinguishable to some people. Something that many folks don’t know is that all orthodontists can be dentists, but not all dentists can be orthodontists. They are both certified oral health care professionals, both treat and maintain the health of your teeth and gums, and both have the education and experience to be called doctors. In these areas, they are pretty comparable. However, there are more differences than similarities. What’s the difference? All orthodontists require further schooling and more experience in their specialty (orthodontics) beyond their dental school training. A similar example would be if a medical doctor elects to take special training to become a surgeon. So, if a dentist has a patient with a dental malocclusion, they will refer them to an orthodontist for treatment. What services do they provide? Dentists typically deal problems like: Gum Disease Tooth Decay Root Canals Crowns Bridges Veneers Tooth Whitening An orthodontist is a dentist that specializes in the alignment of your teeth, and their services typically are employed to…

In today’s world, Invisalign is advertised as an equivalent to braces. However, many do not realize that this is simply not the case. Although completely safe for adults and teens, Invisalign is NOT advertised towards children. Some practices are Invisalign preferred providers, and will try to sell you on the idea of a clear aligner system for your child in order for them to further their profit. Dr. Robert Lorino of Smiles by Lorino provides Invisalign in Gillette, NJ, and can help you decide on what type of braces that your child really needs. Although Invisalign has a relatively average cost (around the same as treatment with traditional braces) for orthodontic treatment, there are a few drawbacks to the aligner system at an early age. Firstly, Dr. Robert Lorino says that if your child hasn’t lost all of their baby teeth (full permanent dentition has not yet occurred) and their permanent teeth haven’t come in yet, then they aren’t eligible for Invisalign OR braces. You need to wait until all of your child’s permanent teeth have grown in first. This will usually occur around twelve to thirteen years old, give or take a few years. Secondly, compared to treatment with…

While both Dentists and Orthodontists work with mouths and teeths, not many patients know the differences between the two or even what specifically an orthodontist is. Orthodontists help to correct patients’ malocclusions which is an abnormality in the alignment of the upper and/or lower teeth. Orthodontists can fix these issues through different…

Valentine’s Day: a day of romance for couples, another lonely holiday for others, and the greatest profits for chocolate producers. Regardless of which category you fit into, dental hygiene is even more important than any number of kisses. How would you even kiss with bad breath? What about the loners with comfort food? Read ahead, dear readers, and get a free pass to smile right! Let’s start with the lips and gums. Both of these organs fulfill similar purposes. Gums hold our teeth together and lips keep teeth and gums protected from the weather. On Valentine’s Day, these two organs are not only visible, but on display. When brushing your teeth, be careful not to excessively put tension on the corners of the mouth and cause them to crack. Gums require an even simpler regimen. Make sure to brush and floss both your teeth and gums twice daily. For more in-depth cleaning, you should go to a dentist at least two times per year. Don’t get ahead of yourself just yet,…

Both dentists and orthodontists can complete Invisalign’s training…

Your "bite" is as important as the straightness and aesthetics of your teeth Many people think that braces only make teeth straight. In fact, they accomplish a lot more than that. Dr. Robert Lorino will evaluate a…
As a parent, getting your child to do anything they don’t want to do can be a daunting task. And let’s face it, properly caring for their braces is probably not something your child wants to do. However, it is extremely important that braces are properly cared for, or treatment will not go as planned. The trick to getting them to want to take proper care of their orthodontic systems is to make it fun! So, Lorino Orthodontics has come up with a list of fun ways to get your child to take care of his or her braces near Wayne, NJ. Brushing dance party- Lorino Orthodontics recommends brushing at least twice a day all the time, but especially when children are undergoing treatment with braces in Wayne, NJ. Proper brushing entails a full two minutes of thorough cleaning, something that many children fail to do. To get your child excited about brushing, make a playlist or CD with their favorite songs and set up a speaker by the sink. Play this song when they start brushing and dance around with them as they clean for the full two minutes. This will make brushing fun, and will help them keep…
Here at Lorino Orthodontics we have a few recommendations to help care for your teeth when eating sugary sweets. The danger of sweets is that it can lead to tooth decay if not treated properly. Both Dr. Robert Lorino and the American Dental Association encourage proper care of your teeth all year long, but with the abundance of candy available this time of year, it’s time to be extra vigilant. Sour and Fruity Candies. The downside of sour candies is the large amount of acid contained in them. Starburst and Skittles are the worst for your child’s teeth since these candies have a low pH value, which is known to ruin enamel. It's the low pH, or acid, that makes you pucker and it’s also what wears down the enamel on your teeth! Without the enamel coating, your teeth can get brittle and nerves can be exposed. Lorino Orthodontics recommends that you brush, or at a minimum, rinse your teeth after indulging in these candies. Hard Candies If hard candies are your favorite, keep this in mind. Hard candies take longer to dissolve so it's like bathing your teeth in sugar and acid. The sugar stays in your mouth longer and the longer the…
Orthodontic treatment shouldn’t be intimidating. Like any medical specialists, orthodontists have terminology they use to discuss dental issues that can be treated with braces and the latest orthodontic technology, like Invisalign. Dr. Robert Lorino, a top orthodontist in Ridgewood, New Jersey, finds that understanding the terms doctors use can help alleviate the fear some patients have before a consultation. Dr. Lorino of Ridgewood, New Jersey, suggests learning these 8 simple words before visiting an orthodontist: 1. Over-bite is when the upper teeth overlap the bottom teeth, which is a minor condition many people have. But a deep-bite, where the upper teeth completely cover the lowers, can be quite unhealthy, according to Dr. Lorino. Deep-bite often is a factor in gum loss and may cause excessive wear on the top front teeth. 2. Crowding, another common dental misalignment, is caused when the dental arch is too small or the teeth are too large. The teeth bunch together and create a crooked smile. Dr. Lorino said the issue can cause gums to recede and weaken, which sometimes leads to impacted teeth, which are teeth that grow beneath the gum line but never push through the surface. 3. Cross-bite, also referred to as…
Are you looking to straighten your teeth but don’t know which orthodontic treatment option is right for you? Traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and lingual braces are all great options, but what if there was another solution available for all cases? Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is a proud provider of Invisalign, an orthodontic breakthrough that may just be the perfect solution for you. There are many benefits of Invisalign near Hawthorne, but we’ve narrowed it down to the top three: 1. What Braces? = Invisalign is one of the only solutions to crooked teeth that is virtually invisible. The Invisalign system is a series of clear, plastic aligners, which are custom fit to align the teeth just as Drs. Lorino and Paralkar direct. In this way, they work as effectively as any other orthodontic treatment, without all the hardware. Over the same period of time as most other treatments, the Invisalign aligners will get teeth straight and positioned to correct any bad bites. So, patients can get beautiful results in the most discreet way possible, and leave people asking “Wait, what braces?” 2. Comfort and Ease = Invisalign’s material not only allows for an invisible look, but also a comfortable…
As orthodontists near Ridgewood, NJ, the team at Smiles by Lorino are asked to help fix many orthodontic needs. The following list is just some of the orthodontic conditions that we see and fix regularly: 1. Openbites, underbites, overbites and deep overbites – Drs. Lorino and Paralkar of Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Ridgewood, NJ specializes in the correction of all four bites. Drs. Lorino and Paralkar encourage that these problems are treated early on because they can be corrected without surgery a lot of times. The fix requires braces, jaw surgery, special appliances and/or retainers. 2. Too many teeth: hyperdontia – Having extra teeth is called hyperdontia. People who have hyperdontia usually also have another condition, such as a cleft palate or Gardner’s Syndrome (which forms tumors that aren’t cancer). Drs. Lorino and Paralkar treat hyperdontia by removing all the extra teeth and correcting the bite with braces. 3. Crooked teeth – The fix will improve your overall dental health, relieving symptoms like jaw pain. Dr. Lorino uses braces (metal or trays), aligners, and retainers to straighten crooked teeth. 4. Gaps – You may not consider a gap between the front teeth a problem at all, but if you…

You Want to Preserve Your Smile. As mentioned, gum disease is one…
Why bother to spend thousands of dollars and years of your time on straightening your teeth, and then ignore your oral hygiene? When you have braces, you will need to brush your teeth several times per day, ideally after every meal. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says that this may sound like a big pain, but you'll get used to it. In fact, you will want to brush your teeth often, because food gets stuck between your brackets, which can be really disgusting and cause bad breath and tooth decay. At the very least, Drs. Lorino and Paralkar say you should swish your mouth with water after eating. For brushing your teeth while wearing braces, Drs. Lorino and Paralkar say you can get an orthodontic toothbrush or use a regular soft toothbrush. Both types of toothbrushes are available in the Allendale area. The important thing is to clean your braces thoroughly, making sure that there is no food debris on any of the brackets. You should also floss at least once per day. It isn't always easy, but there are many "floss threader" products on the market that help. The team at Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics can show you how to…

Do I really need to go to an orthodontist to get braces? You may love your family dentist, and he or she may have told you that they can "do your braces" for a lot less money than an orthodontist. While this is very nice, it's also a big gamble. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says a regular dentist most likely will not understand how complicated each case may be. You don’t want to risk adding more time and expense to your orthodontic treatment which could happen by using a regular dentist. It may be likely you would need to have corrective work done by Drs. Lorino and Paralkar and their orthodontic team. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says that orthodontists are specially trained in tooth movement and jaw function; dentists are not. Yes, some dentists have taken a few course hours to learn how to do Invisalign or other types of braces, but that is not the main thing that they do. In terms of education, Orthodontists first go to dental school and become dentists. Then they attend an orthodontic program for several more years to learn specifically about tooth movement, jaw function, and facial aesthetics. After that, they take a…
Everyone knows the classic story: A kid gets braces, goes to school and now he/she is the target for anyone who thinks it’s funny to be different. You hear the old jabs; metal mouth, brace face, antenna head, etc. The urban dictionary term for this (yes there’s a term!) is Brace-ism. Brace-ism is defined as “Acting mean towards people who have braces on their teeth”. Bullying is wrong on many levels, especially when it’s for the greater good of teeth straightening! Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in Franklin Lakes wish to assure every kid that it’s okay to be different. Braces are essential for healthy straight teeth, so here are some ways to fight against the evil forces of brace-ism! Take the high road! When you are struck with the slings and arrows of an anti-braces onslaught, just turn around and smile. Show them those big, beautiful brackets and be proud! Soon you will have an award winning grin that will put most of those naysayers to shame. Come up with a snappy retort! If someone calls you “brace-face” or “metal mouth” you can volley back with “thanks for noticing I didn’t know you cared!” or “metal in your mouth is…
Do you know how to keep your Invisalign aligners clean? Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is here to help you keep your aligners clean and fresh. Drs. Lorino and Paralkar say that patients should wear their Invisalign aligners for approximately 22 hours each day. Patients remove their aligners for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing, which is the perfect time to clean them. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Wayne recommends the following methods: Method #1: Some patients like using denture cleaning tablets. While you eat you can soak your aligners in denture cleaner (one aligner per one tablet of denture cleaner). At Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics, we suggest leaving the aligners in the cleaning product for approximately one hour. This method of cleaning your Invisalign aligners can be done every day if you want. The denture cleaning tablets will not damage the material that Invisalign uses. Method #2: Use a baking soda product. Drs. Lorino and Paralkar suggest dissolving 1 tablespoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of water, and then soaking your trays in the baking soda water for about an hour. This method can be repeated throughout the day as you feel needed. Method #3: Brush your aligners with a…

Is your teen worried about his/her image and how braces are going to look? At Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics, we recognize that image is very important to a teen and the thought of braces that includes metal brackets and wires does not sound like the next hottest thing. The good news is that there is Invisalign Teen® which is an alternative to traditional braces. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics can fit your teen with Invisalign Teen® and give your teen a whole new way of wearing braces for a "clearly" amazing smile! How does Invisalign Teen® work? Much in the same way as Invisalign®, but with a few added characteristics tailored specifically to the teenage lifestyle. For instance, Invisalign Teen® is designed with compliance indicators that fade from dark to light during the two-week period during which that particular tray is used. Once the indicator has faded, teens know to change trays. And, each aligner comes with up to six free individual replacement aligners in case the original aligner ends up lost or broken, which is another big benefit for teens! For Invisalign Teen® to be the most effective, the same guidelines for Invisalign® should be followed: • Wear each set…
Can I whiten my teeth while I have braces on? According to Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics, the answer is yes. You can in fact whiten your teeth while wearing braces, but it is not recommended. Drs. Lorino and Paralkar say, when you get your braces off after whitening, you may have yellow squares on your teeth where the brackets were attached. The best thing you can do instead is to use a whitening toothpaste, mouthwash and floss! Don’t forget you should keep up with good oral hygiene by brush your braces after every meal. Who doesn’t want a nice white smile to go along with those perfectly straight teeth? As soon as those braces are off, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics recommends that you schedule a cleaning with your dentist. After a good cleaning, if your son or daughter is not content with the color of their teeth, you can buy over the counter whitening strips. Or you can go to your local dentist in Allendale and have them whiten them for you! If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please visit our office near Allendale, NJ! Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is always excited to assist you so feel free…
The day has finally come for you to get your braces removed by Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Wyckoff, NJ. The next step is a retainer! Retainers are used to hold the teeth in their new positions, and are either removable or permanent. Removable retainers are fairly easy to use and care for, and they make brushing and flossing easier and more comfortable. The retainer is placed in at night, worn while you sleep and taken out in the morning. Retainer schedules may vary from individual to individual, but there are generally times during the day where Drs. Lorino and Paralkar may or may not mandate wearing it. Drs. Lorino and Paralkar stress that the removable retainer schedule can lead to forgetfulness. However, if you don’t remember to wear the retainer, you won’t be benefiting from it completely. Permanent retainers are more effective than removable retainer, and are a great option for patients who don’t want the extra responsibility of a retainer schedules. The only thing you should be mindful of with a permanent retainer is that it may be more difficult to floss, but Drs. Lorino and Paralkar can help show you how to quickly and effectively do so. Both…

Even though it’s a little more difficult, flossing with braces keeps your smile healthy and confident. At Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics, we want to make sure all of our patients with braces know how to floss with their individual orthodontic devices. Here are some tools to help you floss while you’re wearing braces and keep your oral hygiene healthy: Floss Threaders work like a needle threader for sewing. You put the floss through a loop at the top and then thread the pointy part under or over the wire (depending on whether you’re flossing top or bottom teeth). Once threaded, you can floss that space like normal. Then just repeat for each space until you’ve got a clean, tartar-free mouth. Proxy Brushes are lifesavers for cleaning teeth with braces. These are tiny little cone-shaped brushes that fit under the wire and between the teeth to remove buildup. WaterPiks are the fanciest flossers for braces. You simply point the flosser tip between your teeth and along the gum line, and it sprays high-pressure water into the spaces between your teeth, removing hard to reach buildup. If you just can’t get it, you’re welcome to stop by Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in…
Braces are an investment both time wise and financially. So don't risk damaging your braces while playing spring sports. Get Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics to recommend which mouth guard will protect your braces and your teeth. Mouth Guards are an essential part of many athletes’ sport equipment. Mouth guards will protect a players’ teeth from dental injury. There are three types of mouth guards: stock mouth guards, boil and bite mouth guards and orthodontic mouth guards. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is happy to advise his patients near Ramsey on which mouth guard is right for them. Stock mouth guards are preformed and come ready to wear. They are inexpensive and can be bought at most sporting goods stores in Ramsey. Unfortunately, little can be done to adjust their fit: they are bulky, make breathing and talking difficult and they provide little or no protection. Dr. Lorino does not recommend this type of mouth guard to their patients because it does not provide the proper protection needed for braces. Boil and bite mouth guards can also be bought at many sporting goods stores in Ramsey, and may offer a better fit than stock mouth protectors. Boil and bite mouth guards are…
Say cheese to get that perfect smile. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics wants to know if dairy is a part of your diet. If not, it should be! According to the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), regular consumption of dairy products such as milk, cheese and yogurt, can actually lower your chances of contracting periodontal disease (gum disease) and improve your overall oral health. Gum disease is caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth that affects the gums and jaw. Gum disease results in a loss of teeth and bone, and has been connected to certain cases of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, respiratory disease and osteoporosis. Eating dairy is not just healthy for building strong bones, but it’s essential for maintaining a strong, healthy mouth. Did you know that cheese is one of the healthiest snacks for your teeth? In addition to providing large amounts of much needed calcium and phosphorous that reduce and/or prevent decreases in the plaque’s pH level and work to remineralize the enamel of your teeth, cheese disrupts the development of cavities, especially when eaten as a snack or at the end of a meal. Cheddar, Swiss, Mozzarella, and Monterey Jack cheese, for example, stimulate the…
Are you curious about getting Invisalign®, but find yourself questioning if it really works? Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Allendale begins the process with the iTero: Intra Oral Digital Scanner. With iTero, Dr. Lorino is able to take a 3-D scan of his patient's teeth and bite, and make adjustments in real time. This saves both, Dr. Lorino and his patients, time and ensures accuracy. More comfortable for patients, iTero captures whole tooth images which makes for a better and tighter fit of the aligners, and additionally, the iTero Invisalign® outcome simulator increases patient acceptance by showing them their current bite and possible end results side-by-side. Next, Dr. Lorino uses ClinCheck® Pro with 3-D Controls to perfect and then approve the ending result virtually before orthodontic  treatment. This ensures a more precise final tooth position. As the latest software invention from Invisalign®, ClinCheck® also gives Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics the control to react and be proactive in setting up tooth movement in which the entire dentition of the 3-D model moves in real time. Invisalign® is a more modern approach to teeth straightening, making for a more comfortable, removable and almost invisible treatment, and with the use of the iTero:…
Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics cautions his patients about the danger of nail biting on your teeth. Nail biting is one of the so-called “nervous habits” that can be triggered by stress, excitement or boredom. Experts say that about thirty percent of children and fifteen percent of adults are nail biters, however most will stop chewing their nails by the time they turn thirty. Here are four dental and general reasons to stop biting your nails: It’s unsanitary. Your nails harbor bacteria and germs, and they are almost twice as dirty as your fingers. Moreover, swallowing dirty nails can lead to stomach problems. It wears down your teeth. Biting your nails can put added stress on your pearly whites, which can lead to crooked teeth. It can delay your orthodontic treatment. For those wearing braces, nail biting puts additional pressure on teeth and weakens roots. It can cost you; literally. Our friends at the Academy of General Dentistry estimate up to $4,000 in extra dental bills over a lifetime. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics recommends the following to kick your nail biting habit: Keep your nails trimmed short; you’ll have less of a nail to bite. Coat your nails with a bitter-tasting…
Dr. Lorino says it’s important to keep your braces clean. Food has more hiding spots than usual in your mouth now that there are braces, so you have to be diligent in order to avoid bad breath, swollen gums, discolored teeth and cavities. Keep your oral appearance up to par while wearing braces with these ten tips from Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics: One tooth at a time. When you brush, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics stresses that you take your time with each individual tooth–At least 10 seconds each–And pay close attention to the spots where your teeth touch your braces. It’s all about the angles. Brush your top teeth and braces with your brush angled downward, and brush your bottom teeth and braces with your brush angled up. The tooth, the whole tooth and nothing but the tooth. While the front surface of your teeth may seem like the most logical to clean, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says that it’s equally important to clean the inner and chewing surface of your teeth, your tongue and along your gum line (a key spot for plaque buildup). Brush after every meal. Food can easily get caught in your braces and in between…
The first thing we do every morning is brush them. The teeth are the hardest substances in the human body. And besides being essential for chewing, the teeth also play an important role in speech. Learn the different parts of the teeth and how they all come together to give you your unique smile the team at Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Summit. Enamel is the hardest, white outer part of the tooth. Enamel is mostly made of calcium phosphate, a rock-hard mineral. Dentin is the layer underlying the enamel. Dentin is made of living cells, which secrete a hard mineral substance. Pulp is the softer, living inner structure of teeth. Blood vessels and nerves run through the pulp of the teeth. Cementum is a layer of connective tissue that binds the roots of the teeth firmly to the gums and jawbone. Periodontal ligament is tissue that helps hold the teeth tightly against the jaw. Can braces get locked while kissing? Well just in time for Valentine's Day, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in Morris County refers to the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) to answer the myth surrounding locking braces and orthodontic treatment. Currently more than four million children and one million adults in North America wear braces. If two people with braces kiss, can their braces become locked together? Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says that with today's smaller sleeker braces, it would be extremely difficult - almost impossible - to lock braces while kissing. So if Cupid is pointing his arrow at you this Valentine's Day, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says not to worry about your braces getting locked with someone else's braces. Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate the ones we love, and what better way to celebrate than with a kiss! Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in Morris County does not want you to worry about your braces getting locked. What you may have to worry about is that box of chocolates. It's those sweet, sour and sticky candies that Dr. Lorino says are known to damage braces and teeth even if they do taste great. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is always…
What’s a cooler than recycling your old toothbrush and making a toothbrush bracelet? Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Waldwick recommends that their patients replace their toothbrush every 3 months or when there is noticeable wear, or when we have an illness. So when it’s time to replace your toothbrush, try making toothbrush jewelry. Here's what you'll need: 1. An old toothbrush 2. A pair of pliers 3. Vise grips 4. Tongs 5. A pot big enough to accommodate your toothbrush 6. A parent! Step 1: Take your old toothbrush and have your parent gently remove all of the bristles from the toothbrush with a pair of pliers. Support should be applied to the neck of the toothbrush to avoid breaking it. Step 2: Once all of the bristles are removed from the toothbrush, have your parent boil it for an hour. Be patient, you get to wear it whenever you want. Let your parent do all the hard labor. And it has to boil for a whole hour so that when your parent starts the bending process the toothbrush doesn't snap. Step 3: Because the toothbrush is very hot, your parent needs to bend it using the tongs to hold the toothbrush in the…
Dental braces (also known as orthodontic braces, or braces) are devices used by Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics located near Wyckoff. Braces align and straighten teeth and help to position them with regard to a person's bite, while also working to improve dental health. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics uses braces to correct under bites, as well as malocclusions, overbites, cross bites, open bites, deep bites, crooked teeth, and various other flaws of the teeth and jaw. Braces can be either cosmetic or structural. Dental braces are often used in conjunction with other orthodontic appliances to help widen the palate or jaws and to otherwise assist in shaping the teeth and jaws. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics explains that the application of braces moves the teeth as a result of force and pressure on the teeth. There are four basic elements that are needed in order to help move the teeth. In the case of traditional metal or wire braces, one uses brackets, bonding material, arch wire, and ligature elastic, to help align the teeth. The teeth move when the arch wire puts pressure on the brackets and teeth. Sometimes springs or rubber bands are used to put more force in a specific…
Oral health begins with clean teeth. Keeping the area where your teeth meet your gums clean can prevent gum disease, and keeping your tooth surfaces clean can help you avoid cavities. Dr. Lorino of Lorino Orthodontics offers the following tips to his patients near Ramsey: Brush your teeth at least twice a day. When you brush, don’t rush. Dr. Lorino recommends brushing for two minutes twice a day, and more frequently if you are going through orthodontic treatment. Take enough time to do a thorough job. Use the proper equipment. We at Lorino Orthodontics recommend using a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush that fits your mouth comfortably. Also, consider using an electric or battery-operated toothbrush, for it can reduce plaque and the chance of gum disease more than manual brushing does. Moreover, these devices are helpful if you have arthritis or other problems that make it difficult to brush effectively. Practice good techniques. Hold your toothbrush at a slight angle aiming the bristles toward the area where your tooth meets your gum. Again, Dr. Lorino reminds that keeping the area where your teeth meet your gums clean can prevent gum disease. Also, don’t forget to gently brush the outside,…

Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics wants to help you avoid an orthodontic emergency with a few tips. Children and adults benefit from fluoride use. Fluoride strengthens developing teeth in children and prevents tooth decay in both children and adults. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics encourages their patients in New Vernon to check with their township to see if the local water source contains fluoride. If not, they will need to get fluoride from another source. Most toothpastes and mouth rinses contain fluoride. Fluoride levels in tap water may not be high enough without supplementation to prevent tooth decay. Contact your water utility in New Vernon to determine the level for your area. Talk with Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics about your fluoride needs. Ask if fluoride supplements or a higher strength, prescription fluoride product is necessary for you. Also, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics sees more people turning from tap water to more bottled water. In fact, a 2012 Journal of Pediatric Dentistry study found that more than 65 percent of parents who preferred bottled water for themselves and their children did not know what levels of fluoride it contained. If you have concerns about fluoride, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in New Vernon is here to help. Give us a call.
Experts say it's never too late for braces. As a result, more and more adults near Summit and around the world are taking the plunge to get braces. Fortunately, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is close to Summit and offers adult braces. For maximum effectiveness, it's good to get orthodontic treatment early but the benefits are not lost on adults. The days of being referred to as "metal mouth" are over as there are more friendly options for adult braces that are lightweight and cosmetically appealing such as Invisalign®. In addition, the time process and pain associated with having braces has lesson. Adults on average can expect to be wearing braces between 12 to 20 months. Adults make up approximately 30% of all orthodontic patients in the U.S. so the next time you visit Smiles by Lorino…

Invisalign aligners makes Halloween candy easier. If you have Invisalign and plan on Trick or Treating this Halloween, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in Ramsey has some helpful hints on candies that are easier on braces. People who wear braces are limited in what types of candy they can enjoy but Invisalign wearers have much more flexibility. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics warns that when you wear traditional braces, candy can destroy the metal work – which can mean costly and time-consuming repairs. Invisalign makes Halloween candy easier to enjoy. Unlike traditional braces which have wires and brackets for candy to get caught it, Invisalign has removable aligners which avoids candy getting stuck. Invisalign makes it easier to enjoy that tasty snack at Halloween. Even with Invisalign, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics says that you must take care of your teeth to prevent sugary substances from staying on your teeth and lead to tooth decay. So after enjoying your Halloween snack, remember to brush and floss your teeth before putting your Invisalign aligners back in. If you can't brush right away, get some water to rinse your mouth out with. Enjoy Halloween this year while Trick or Treating in Ramsey with your removable…
Halloween is the holiday of candy and lots of sugar and lots of sugar can be problematic for braces. If you have braces and plan on Trick or Treating this Halloween, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics in Morris County has some helpful hints on braces and Halloween candy. One issue with braces and candy is that eating too many sweets can leave sugar under your braces and lead to tooth decay if not treated properly. So it is important that you don't let dental health become a scary affair, so be sure to brush and floss after your Halloween outings. Dr. Lorino says this will dislodge any candy and other foods stuck in the braces (and is just good dental hygiene you should be practicing daily). Generally any sticky, hard, chewy or crunchy foods should be limited or avoided. The American Association of Orthodontics recommends avoiding: caramel, nuts, licorice, jelly beans, hard pretzels, bubble gum, candy corn, lollipops, taco chips and ice. An off-limits treat now and then is acceptable but be sure to brush and floss afterwards and when it comes to hard, crunchy items, chew lightly. When Trick or Treating this Halloween in Morris County area, Dr Lorino says…
Avoid damaging your braces while apple picking this season. If you have braces and are planning to go apple picking in the Harding area, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics has some helpful hints. Apples always make that list of foods to avoid if you have braces. While wearing braces, Dr.Lorino recommends that you stay away from foods that you bite directly into to avoid damaging your braces. This does not mean that you can't have apples. Dr. Lorino says to cut apples into wedges. If you cut apples into smaller pieces, your braces will not come directly into contact with biting directly into the apple thus, avoid damaging braces. Staying away from certain foods that you like may not be fun, but eating things that you're not supposed to eat can cause broken wires or brackets. Damaged braces can be painful and could potential prolong treatment. In other words, if you eat foods that you should be avoiding, you could damage your braces and be stuck with orthodontic treatment of braces for even longer. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics is always available to help you with any of your orthodontic concerns. So while apple picking this season, avoid damaging your braces by…
Wearing orthodontic braces may be the best choice for correcting your teeth and improving your smile, and that’s why you’ve come to see Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics. Braces, which consist of brackets and wires, work by gently applying pressure to the teeth, and that pressure causes them to move into the correct position. In some cases elastics, or rubber bands, are used to apply additional pressure needed to move your teeth. Customized for each patient near Ramsey, the rubber bands typically stretch over tiny loops on the top and bottom brackets of the braces. Smiles by Lorino says that if worn consistently, and every day, these tiny elastics will apply the steady pressure needed to guide your teeth into the correct position. These elastics are crafted from medical-grade latex, which is safe to be in contact with your mouth. It’s common to remove the elastics during meals if opening your mouth wide enough to eat is difficult. Our staff at Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics will demonstrate how to affix the elastics so it will soon become second nature to replace them. The Do’s and the Don'ts DO – Get in the habit of carrying around extra rubber bands and replace…

Did you know that good oral health is linked to your diet? Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics near Summit say to prevent cavities and maintain good oral health examine your diet -- what you eat and how often you eat -- are important factors. Dr. Smiles by Lorino says changes in your mouth start the minute you eat certain foods. Bacteria in the mouth convert sugars and carbohydrates from the foods you eat to acids, and it's the acids that begin to attack the enamel on teeth, starting the decay process. Dr. Lorino warns the more often you eat and snack, the more frequently you are exposing your teeth to the cycle of decay or cavities. Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics recommends certain foods that will keep your mouth healthy. The best food choices for the health of your mouth include cheeses, chicken or other meats, nuts, and milk. These foods are thought to protect tooth enamel by providing the calcium and phosphorus needed to remineralize teeth (a natural process by which minerals are redeposited in tooth enamel after being removed by acids). Other food choices that Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics includes are firm/crunchy fruits (for example, apples and pears) and vegetables.…

It keeps track of how long the brushing lasted, and how rigorous it was in terms of reaching each and every tooth, and the gums. There's a bit of gameplay built in as well, which challenges users to do better next time, and the company has created an API, hoping that third-party developers will come up with additional apps…

Is tooth decay or cavities a concern of yours for your teenager?? Smiles by Lorino in Wyckoff warns that there is special concern for tooth decay and oral health for school-age children. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry highlights that tooth/dental decay in kids is a serious problem and urges parents to start early to try and prevent it. Tooth decay (cavities) is a common, preventable problem for people of all ages. For children, untreated cavities can cause pain, dysfunction, school absences, difficulty concentrating, and poor appearance—problems that greatly affect a child's quality of life and ability to succeed. One of the things that Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics sees is the rise in sports, energy drinks and monster drinks in teenagers. Dr. Lorino says that these drinks are dental poison because they contain so much sugar. Dr. Lorino in Wyckoff also warns patients about carbonated drinks which can erode the enamel that protects your teeth. Also, chewing gum with XYLITOL, a non-sugar substance, helps to stimulate saliva which naturally helps to clean your mouth. As always, Smiles by…
Over 4 million Americans suffer from dry mouth or Sjögren's syndrome. Unfortunately, dry mouth can lead to increased oral health problems. Dr. Lorino from Smiles by Lorino in Warren explains that when individuals have Sjögren's syndrome, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks tear ducts and saliva. This in turn leads to constant dryness. Even though saliva isn’t a desirable topic to talk about, saliva has a very important job -- saliva helps protect teeth and gums from bacteria. When there is a lack of saliva, an individual’s teeth are unprotected and leave them susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease. One important characteristic of saliva is that it is rich in calcium and minerals. When saliva washes over your teeth, the calcium and minerals get deposited over your teeth strengthening the enamel. Saliva also helps to dilute the acidity in your mouth, especially after you eat. If you suffer from dry mouth, Smiles by Lorino says you may want to check your medicine cabinet. There are medications such as antihistamines, decongestants, painkillers and antidepressants that can contribute to dry mouth. If dry mouth continues to be a problem, you may need to change your medication regiment. Healthy gums should appear…

Did you know that your memory can be linked to your oral hygiene?? A report in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry (webmd.com) showed that adults with gingivitis (swollen, bleeding gums) performed worse on tests of memory and other cognitive skills than did those with healthier gums and mouths. Individuals with gingivitis were more likely to perform poorly in mainly two areas, subtraction and verbal recall. Both are skills that are needed every day. A common hindrance to good oral hygiene is crooked teeth. Having crooked teeth makes it harder to floss and many give up flossing because it is difficult to get in between teeth. What people need to remember is that flossing is THE best way to remove plaque from in between teeth! Plaque is essentially bacteria and, if not removed, grows within the gums, causing gingivitis. Let Smiles by Lorino help you and your child with good oral health. The staff in Franklin Lakes is available to do a full evaluation of your mouth and give expert advice on how to have optimal oral health. Who knows it may help increase your child's test scores. Why not give it a try. Research supports that a healthy…

Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. At Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics, we want to get our patients aware of this important subject. Why is this type of celebration—and year-round attention to children’s dental health--important? Here at Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics we encourage developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits. By developing these good habits, it helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Despite the fact that it’s almost entirely preventable, tooth decay is the most common chronic disease in children. More than 40 percent of children ages 2 to 11 have had a cavity in their primary (baby) teeth, and more than two-thirds of 16- to 19-year-olds have had a cavity in their permanent teeth. Although overall rates of tooth decay have decreased over the past four decades, decay has actually increased in preschool age children in recent years. The good news is there are safe and effective preventive measures that can protect teeth. Good oral hygiene practices such as thorough brushing with fluoride toothpaste can help keep children from getting cavities.…
Valentine's Day is a day to celebrate the ones we love. What better way to celebrate than with a kiss! But, no matter if it's your 5-year old, your spouse, or your significant other, no one wants to kiss or be kissed by someone with bad oral hygiene. In order to keep your mouth healthy and attractive, Smiles by Lorino Orthodontics offer these easy steps to follow that can make your mouth kissable. Brush 2 Times Per Day -- This is probably the most important thing you can do for your oral health. Brushing after every meal is even better! Floss Every Day -- Flossing reaches the surfaces that your toothbrush can't. If you don't floss, you are missing 35% of your teeth's surfaces, allowing plaque to continue its rampage on your teeth. Visit Your Dentist Every 6 Months -- By getting a check-up and cleaning every six months, this will allow you to stay ahead of potential oral health issues, such as decay and gum disease. Limit Sweets -- Each time bacteria comes into contact with sugar in your mouth, acid is produced, which attacks your teeth for at least 20 minutes and can cause tooth decay. If you…

We’ve all heard the expression: New Year, new me! This year, instead of making goals to get in shape or start eating right (which, by the way, are both great goals, but tend to only last about two weeks for most of us who love a good slice of chocolate cake), make a goal that will last you a lifetime. The goal of a beautiful Invisalign enhanced smile! Smiles by Lorino of Long Hill and Franklin Lakes, NJ can make that dream a reality in 2014!             Along with traditional metal braces, Smiles by Lorino offers the technologically advanced, amazing service of Invisalign, which often takes less time and pain than traditional methods. This system allows you to straighten your smile using a series of clear plastic aligners. Often, patients are worried about their looks and are afraid to hurt their confidence by starting treatment. Not anymore! Invisalign is barely noticable and will keep you looking your best. Plus, because they have no metal or wires, these aligners are extremely comfortable. This is an important benefit that makes Invisalign stand out from other standard clear braces that use brackets and invisible wires. Invisalign is removable, making eating and brushing simple…
While you’re busy making your list of New Year’s resolutions about saving more money and going to the gym, Dr. Lorino of Smiles by Lorino in Franklin Lakes suggests that you make a few for your teeth, too! Here are six resolutions that will help keep your smile healthy and bright for 2014. 1) Floss every day – As the saying goes, “You don’t have to floss all your teeth, only the ones you want to keep.” Floss removes plaque that can’t be removed by brushingAs we age, the leading cause of tooth loss is not cavities or trauma but gum (periodontal) disease. Flossing is the best prevention of periodontal disease. 2) Brush two times a day – Two is the magic number. Be sure to brush your teeth morning and night, for 2 minutes each time 3) See your dentist every 6 months -- Regular check-ups are the key to prevention. A visit to your dentist on a regular basis allows for potential problems to be prevented and new problems to be caught early. 4) Quit smoking -- Smoking causes discoloration to teeth, bad breath and, of course, cancers of the mouth and other parts of the body. 5) Cut down on sugary drinks,…
2013 is a unique year for American Jews. A once in eternity overlap with Chanukah and Thanksgiving:. This year it may mean that some of our patients at Smiles by Lorino in Long Hill will be replacing their sweet potatoes with latkes. The first day of Chanukah/Hanukkah starts at sunset on Wednesday November 27 the night before Thanksgiving, which falls on November 28, 2013. It turns out that this has never happened before . . . and it will never happen again. Thanksgiving is set as the fourth Thursday in November, meaning the latest it can be is November 28. November 27 is also the earliest Chanukah can be. The last time this would have happened was 1861. However, Thanksgiving was only formally established by President Lincoln in 1863. So, the overlap has never officially occured before. Why won't it ever happen again? The next time Chanukah falls on November 27 is 2146 (which happens to be a Monday). Therefore, 2013 is the only time Chanukah will ever overlap with Thanksgiving. Of course, if the Jewish calendar is never modified in any way, then it will slowly move forward through the Gregorian calendar, until it loops all the way back to where it is…
Located in Long Hill NJ, Dr. Robert Lorino sees Thanksgiving as a time to get together with family and take a day to remember all of those things that we’re thankful for.  It’s a time to gain perspective on what’s really important in our lives, as well as a time to gain perspective on the fact that we normally don’t consume 7,000 calories in a day nor eat for eight hours straight as we sometimes do during Thanksgiving. With all of the non-stop nibbling that most of us do on this holiday, it’s almost impossible not to have one of the worst days for our teeth that we may have all year. Here are a few tips from Dr. Lorino on things you can do Thanksgiving Day to help your braces stay damage-free and your teeth stay clean and healthy: Drink water while you eat — One of the worst things you can do to your teeth is to nibble on food all day. The reason being is that when you do this, your saliva doesn’t have a chance to ever really get your teeth clean throughout the day, and therefore bacteria just continues to breed. But, if you drink…
Deciding to seek orthodontic treatment can be a big decision. Many children, as well as adults, often unknowingly begin to see many oral issues that may be associated with an orthodontic treatment. These problems are less obvious than just simply crooked teeth, and they do need attention. Dr. Lorino recommends to look put for the following signs when assessing if and when you will need treatment in Bergen or Morris County NJ. Difficulty chewing or biting Misaligned top and bottom rows of teeth Under- or overbite Uneven wearing on the teeth Difficulty speaking Thumb sucking Grinding or tooth clenching Jaw pain Tooth crowding Jaw shifts when biting Excessive spacing between teeth Each of these problems can be a signal of the necessity of braces. When looking for treatment options, Dr. Lorino offers many different options that can solve any and all of the issues. Invisalign is a clear alternative to braces that can solve many of these cases. Clear braces, as well as traditional braces, can also be a solution. There are also many orthodontic appliances such as permanent retainers and palate expanders that can play a role in solving oral difficulties. For more information, contact the Franklin Lakes or…
As with any purchase, the cost of orthodontic appliances must be taken in to consideration when searching for the right treatment for you. As you search for the best treatment plan, make sure to look into the costs of each type of braces, most importantly Invisalign. Invisalign’s rising popularity may have you thinking about using it as a potential alternative. However, many are unaware of how its price compares to traditional braces. Dr. Lorino, the premier orthodontist in Northern New Jersey, is a specialist in providing Invisalign treatments to patients in the Bergen and Morris County area. He has been providing this product to patients for many years, and is considered one of the best and most reliable doctors in New Jersey. According to Dr. Lorino and his team, braces and Invisalign can be very similar in cost. While the actual price varies in every case, generally speaking Invisalign costs around $5,000 with options from $3,500 to $8,000. Traditional braces can cost anywhere from $4,000 to $10,000, meaning that often times, Invisalign can be the better economic alternative. In addition, your dental or health insurance may cover part of the cost. According to the Invisalign.com cost calculator, insurance can cover about…
Dr. Lorino wants to remind Northern NJ patients of the importance of mouthwash and other dental hygiene products when living with braces. Often times, many patients seem to neglect use of certain products due to their difficulties with fitting between braces. However, floss and mouthwash are still very important. Many people use mouthwash only occasionally specifically to mask bad breath. They swig a capful after they've eaten food with garlic, for example, swirl it around their mouth for a few seconds and spit it out. But mouthwash shouldn't be used merely for social acceptability says Dr. Lorino, it should be part of a regimen of good oral hygiene in Bergen and Morris County NJ. An antiseptic dental rinse can help minor gum inflammations and irritations from orthodontic appliances. It can also promote natural healing of canker sores, minor wounds and other mouth and gum irritations by removing debris. Mouthwash, ADA approved antibacterial ones especially, reduce the bacterial count and stop bacterial activity in dental plaque, which can cause gingivitis, an early, reversible form of periodontal (gum) disease. Dr. Lorino and his team recommend consistent use of mouthwashes, twice daily for best results, in Long Hill and Franklin Lakes NJ. For…
As a parent, your number one concern is your child's health, and your kid's smile is no exception to that. Starting a child on the correct path to dental health is key, but many wonder when the perfect time to bring their child to their first appointment at Lorino Orthodontics should be. Some may say the answer is when they first start to notice dental issues, but the best age for children to be seen by an orthodontist for the first time is 7. Why age 7? Because many problems can be identified at that age and corrected early so future dental visits are a breeze. A few things Dr. Lorino will look for at the first appointment include: Tooth Loss and Eruption: By age 7, children should have at least four permanent molars and four permanent incisors. If there are more or less teeth than this, there may be problems with crowding, missing, or extra teeth. Sometimes removing a primary tooth early or maintaining a space where a tooth has been lost prematurely can prevent bigger problems later on. Crowding and Spacing: At this age it is possible to tell if a child has a problem with crowding a…
